Cars.com’s American-Made Index
The American-Made Index is Cars.com’s response to, “Which cars are the most American?” The automotive research leader considers several factors when determining which cars are the most American. This year, two Mazda models made the list, and you can find them right here at our dealership.
Explore the features and capabilities of these Mazda models and how they made their way on the American-Made Index. Afterward, visit our dealership to take any of our available Mazda models for a test drive!
What Determines An American-Made Car?
What does it mean for a car to be an “American” car? Cars.com looks at five key factors when considering how American a car is. Here are the factors that Cars.com takes into account when deciding which vehicle makes the list:
5 Major Factors
- Location(s) of final assembly
- Percentage of U.S. and Canadian parts
- Countries of origin for all available engines
- Countries of origin for all available transmissions
- U.S. manufacturing workforce
It’s important to keep in mind that when determining which cars are the most American, there are also factors that can prevent a car from making the American-Made Index. Here are factors that immediately disqualify a car from making the list:
Disqualifying Factors
- Models with a gross vehicle weight rating above 8,500 pounds — mostly full-size vans, three-quarter- and 1-ton pickup trucks, and larger commercial vehicles — which are exempt from AALA requirements.
- Models from automakers that build fewer than 1,000 cars in a given model year. Such cars are exempt from certain AALA requirements.
- Models set for imminent discontinuation, or production moving outside the U.S., without a clear U.S.-built successor.
- Models not yet on sale at the time of the study (in this case, spring 2025), even if they’re from the current model year.
- Models intended solely for government or commercial fleets.
- Models that don’t meet minimum sales or inventory thresholds. (Such thresholds cover roughly 98% of all passenger vehicle sales, so exclusions here are minimal.)
- Models for which we cannot verify sufficient information from automakers, dealership audits, Cars.com inventory, and government records.
